Kensington and Truth

Those of you with good memories may remember the adverts placed by Kensington in the local press during the early days of the Lytham Quays affair. They carried the curious headline “Kensington - Always giving you the Truth”.

Time has moved on and recently there was an article in the Daily Telegraph which was very favourable to Kensington and Lytham Quays. Denley Barrow of Kensington was quoted in this article, as was Alison Jack of Defend Lytham.

Not only was Alison misquoted (we had the written text of what she said so we were absolutely sure), but Mr Barrow was allowed to get away with suggesting that the majority of the town were for the development and that we were against any new building at all. The misquote of Alison’s statement by the paper compounded this still further.

Fortunately we have the Press Complaints Commission to arbitrate on such matters and so we lodged an official complaint. The upshot is that the Telegraph accepted the need to remove Mr Barrow’s rather questionable statements from the on-line version and to quote Alison properly and in full.

Spot the difference:

Original

“Lytham Quays was to have been an even bigger jewel in Kensington's crown until planners forced them to scale down their plans. The marina, leisure centre and network of canals that the developer had first envisaged had to stay on the drawing-board. Alison Jack is a spokesperson for Defend Lytham, a pressure group that is the fly in Kensington's ointment. "We're anti-development when it destroys the very character and infrastructure which makes a place like Lytham attractive to live in," she says. "The council must be strong in restricting the Trojan horse developer who uses an initial permission and then makes alterations which ramp up the size of a development." Barrow sighs, but does not sound bitter. "We are looking to the future," he says. "In truth, the majority of people in Lytham were for it, but we're battling with those who are against any new building."

Corrected

Lytham Quays was to have been an even bigger jewel in Kensington's crown until planners forced them to scale down their plans. The marina, leisure centre and network of canals that the developer had first envisaged had to stay on the drawing-board. Alison Jack is a spokesperson for Defend Lytham, a pressure group that is the fly in Kensington's ointment. "Defend Lytham are not anti-development and recognise the need for some affordable housing, but we are anti developers whose plans would destroy the very character and infrastructure which makes a place like Lytham attractive to live in," she says. "The council must be strong in resisting the 'Trojan Horse' developer who uses an initial permission and then makes alterations which endlessly ramp up the size of the development. We do not want to see the wholesale concreting over of our area."

Mr Barrow’s quote about most of you being in favour has now been completely removed.

“Kensington - needing a little help to give you the truth!”
