Statement from Alison Jack, Chairman of Defend Lytham -
Defend Lytham was launched in June 2005 in response to the public outcry over the proposed Lytham Quays development. Professional advice was obtained to the effect that this development would have a seriously detrimental effect on Lytham in a large number of ways. It was apparent to us that the environmental threats associated with the proposed development had not received adequate public consultation, especially the land drainage implications.
Defend Lytham made urgent representations to Fylde Borough Council and its relevant officers expressing their concerns, and fronted a campaign to fully inform the public of all issues and of the advice they had received. Public concern was enormous and thankfully this resulted in the developers withdrawing their application in November 2005.
Since that time Defend Lytham has continued to be vigilant and concerned for the town. Lytham occupies a special place not only in the minds of its residents but of those who visit. It is a small town with a big heart and a real community feel. This is nowhere better demonstrated than in its compact, well defined centre, with its wealth of small shops, offering a welcoming and personal service.
The town retains priceless assets which are all too rare in this country. There is Lytham Green and its Georgian windmill, Lowther Gardens and Lytham Hall and architecture that reflects the character of the town. The Estuary flood plains are home to a wide variety of wildlife and are recognised as being of outstanding importance both nationally and internationally.
Defend Lytham is committed to monitoring the threats to the historical, architectural, constructional and environmental heritage of our lovely town and has been hard at work in the following areas during 2006….
- Public concern was expressed over the location of a new Health Centre and Defend Lytham has made successful representations to the Primary Care Trust in that regard and helped influence the design.
- A document is being prepared entitled “Ecology and the Quality of Life in Fylde”. It sets out to remind us, and those who are our representatives on the Council, of the priceless natural assets in our midst and of the delicate ecological environment in which we live.
- A Planning Consultant has been employed to make representations to the Planning Inspectorate with regard to the Aegon site at the junction of Ballam Rd and Hall Park.
- Monitoring developments with regard to the impact on Lytham of the expansion of Blackpool Airport.
- Keeping a watching brief on other sites of interest and possible inappropriate development, e.g. Lytham Police station and the Land Registry.
This web site contains full information about the activities of Defend Lytham since it was established and will be updated regularly in 2007 as we continue working hard, with your support to make a difference to the future of our town.
