Defend Lytham was launched in June 2005 in response to the public outcry over the proposed Lytham Quays development. Professional advice was obtained to the effect that this development would have a seriously detrimental effect on Lytham in a large number of ways. It was apparent to us that the environmental threats associated with the proposed development had not received adequate public consultation, especially the land drainage implications.
Defend Lytham made urgent representations to Fylde Borough Council and its relevant officers expressing their concerns, and fronted a campaign to fully inform the public of all issues and of the advice they had received. Public concern was enormous and thankfully this resulted in the developers withdrawing their application in November 2005.
Since that time Defend Lytham has continued to be vigilant and concerned for the town. Lytham occupies a special place not only in the minds of its residents but of those who visit. It is a small town with a big heart and a real community feel. This is nowhere better demonstrated than in its compact, well defined centre, with its wealth of small shops, offering a welcoming and personal service.
The town retains priceless assets which are all too rare in this country. There is Lytham Green and its Georgian windmill, Lowther Gardens and Lytham Hall and architecture that reflects the character of the town. The Estuary flood plains are home to a wide variety of wildlife and are recognised as being of outstanding importance both nationally and internationally.
Defend Lytham is committed to monitoring the threats to the historical, architectural, constructional and environmental heritage of our lovely town has been hard at work in the following areas….
